There are many technological ways to communicate in the modern workplace: phone, email, text message, instant message, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few. Theoretically, a week or more could go by without seeing colleagues’ faces, even if they sit in the cubes surrounding yours.

This lack of face-to-face contact can, at times, lead to feelings of isolation in the workplace. An impersonal work environment may contribute to communication breakdowns, misinterpretation of written messages, misunderstanding of colleagues’ intentions, and disconnection from tasks and goals.
