A novel solution to the problem of providing a trusted mobile environment

Published October 2007

The mobility of employees is a fundamental part of the businesses infrastructure. Mobility allows employees to work from home, from client sites, or from anywhere else that is practical.

An organisation must address many security risks to ensure that its networks and private information remain safe. An employee who remotely connects to an office network may pose a serious risk. Mobile users are typically issued with laptops, but employees may still be required to access an internal network, or other business resources, from unmanaged machines that are neither trustworthy nor properly secured. An alternative to the use of managed laptops, which can provide an equivalent degree of security, does exist. An encrypted bootable operating system can be run from a USB device or CD-ROM to provide complete isolation from the threats normally associated with the use of unmanaged machines.

Based on this approach, BeCrypt has developed a novel solution, consisting of a lightweight bootable operating system which is customised to contain applications and security functionality as required by the user. The strength of the solution comes from the encryption of the media on which the operating system is stored, the authentication mechanism which guards the encryption key, and the isolation of the secure environment from its temporary host. The solution is cost-effective, highly scalable, and can be customised to meet the specific needs of businesses and users.
