Smaller news startups, like The Huffington Post and Buzzfeed were developing content and applications faster than Dow Jones’ subsidiaries. The AWS Cloud provided Dow Jones with the agility the development teams needed to improve time to market for its products, making Dow Jones more competitive with the younger startup competitors. To meet the goal of reducing from 50 data centers to 6 worldwide, Dow Jones needed to move 10,000 compute instances, virtual and physical, into the public cloud. The AWS infrastructure provided the scale and flexibility needed to do so, and Dow Jones estimated it could save them $100 million annually. The compute capacity and automated nature of AWS offerings allowed the engineering team to focus on building applications to deliver the best possible customer experience for online subscribers.
